Bacteriostatic water is a sterile, non-pyrogenic water solution containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative, which inhibits the growth of bacteria. It is commonly used to dilute or reconstitute medications for injection, especially in multi-dose vials. The inclusion of benzyl alcohol allows the vial to be used multiple times after opening, and for the medication to maintain its integrity for long duration’s of time, unlike sterile water which is for single use. Bacteriostatic water must be used under proper sterile conditions and is not suitable for use in newborns due to potential toxicity of benzyl alcohol.
